Qi gong (chee gung) is a term the current Chinese government coined to cover literally thousands of traditional health exercises that focus on breathing, movement and visualization. We teach them as a health exercises and as a tool for self-cultivation. We learn to breathe deeply, gently exercise and develop mental focus. Meditation is a practice of quieting the discursive mind and allowing ourselves to just simply “be” for a period of time. We will learn techniques to quiet our mind and let go of the mental chatter that tends to overwhelm us.
We combine various qi gong exercises and sets with quiet meditation time. Most classes will involve both. We will focus primarily on traditions in the Taoist and Zen schools and investigate the uses of gongs, singing bowls, mykogyus and other aids to quiet the mind. The intent of this class is to relax the body and the mind and to have a good time with friends. All levels are welcome but the class is taught at a beginner’s level. Curriculum is ongoing. Qi gong/meditation classes are $200 per 12-week module. If you would like to take the tai chi class as well, tuition is $300. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended since you will be standing on a studio floor during the class. Class is taught by Tony Burris, 15-year practitioner and ordained Taoist clergy.
