Tai Chi Classes

“Tai chi” is short for tai chi chuan which translates as “grand ultimate boxing”. Tai chi was originally developed as a martial art in the thirteenth century, however we teach it as a health exercise and as a tool for self-cultivation. It is practiced as a physical exercise, a method of relaxation, a tool for body awareness and an expression of Taoist principles.

Harvard Medical School has a wonderful page on the benefits of tai chi and we encourage you to read it here.

Classes are taught in twelve-week modules. We teach the Cheng Man-Ching 37 Short Form Yang Style. It is a modified and easily digestible form for beginners to learn. We will learn the first third of this form, get some gentle exercise, improve our balance, leg strength and postural awareness and have a whole lot of fun! The class is open to any level but is designed for those at the beginner level.

Tai chi classes are $200 per 12-week module. If you would like to take the Qi Gong class as well, tuition is $300. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended since you will be standing on a studio floor during the class. Class is taught by Tony Burris, 15-year practitioner and ordained Taoist clergy.
